A fjord is a long, narrow estuary with steep sides which is created when the sea floods a glacial valley. It develops when a glacier slices into a U-shaped valley through the abrasion of the surrounding bedrock by the rocks and sediment the glacier carries.

These valleys were formed during the ice ages. The sea was at a much lower level than it is now. At the end of these ice ages, the climate warmed up and the glaciers retreated. Because of an influx of water from melting ice sheets and glaciers, the sea level rose, flooding the vacated valleys with seawater to form fjords.
