Holidays in Miami

USA Main Guide | Florida Main Guide

Miami has grown from a town of some 1700 people in 1900 to a huge metropolis of more than 350 thousand today. The city has a very diverse population, with more than half the population being foreign-born.

The international airport and cruse ship ports receive millions of visitors each year. Miami boasts the first privately-owned free trade zone in the world. It is very much the financial capital for the Caribbean and for Latin America, and is a major centre for the movie industry.

Accommodation and Food

Miami has plenty of accommodation on offer, ranging from grand hotels to privately rented houses. There is also a vast range of eating places available. These range from fairly modest to incredibly luxurious. International cuisine is widely available, but quintessentially 'American' dishes such as surf 'n' turf and frighteningly large steaks are always popular. If you're hungry and on a budget then perhaps an all-you-can-eat buffet might be the way to go.

Activities

Miami has great beaches and glorious sunshine. It would be a shame not to do some serious loafing about during your visit, especially since there is always a chance of seeing someone famous at the more trendy beaches. Miami Beach and South Beach are world famous. Watson Island is good for kids, while there are several good resorts along the coasts, for example at Sunny Isles, Bal Harbour and South Beach.

Key Largo, largest of the Florida Keys, is just one hour away and offers some of the best diving to be had, on the only living coral reef in the United States. You can also wreck-dive on former Navy ship which was deliberately sunk to become art of the reef. The Everglades National Park is also just one hour away.

Also in the Florida Keys you can find excellent sport fishing for Tuna and Sailfsh and a marine mammal facility where you can come face to face with sea lions and dolphins as well as stingrays and other aquatic life. Key West, which is a 5-hour drive form Miami, has a wealth of fascinating history and also excellent nightlife. You can visit Ernest Hemingway's home (which is now a museum) and the Key West Lighthouse, or visit the Middle Keys and swim with dolphins at the Dolphin Research Centre.

If you like shopping, try the Dolphin Mall near the airport, Sawgrass Mills and Aventura Mall with over 250 major stores, a huge cinema and many restaurants and cafes. The shops at Bal Harbour are smaller but they include some very upmarket boutiques.

For a bit of culture, take a look at the Bass Museum of Art with its eclectic collection of exhibits, or the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, an impressive collection of antiques housed in a luxurious villa. Lincoln Road Mall has outdoor art galleries as well as many shops and cafes.

For an animal adventure, try the Miami Metrozoo. With over 900 wild animals in a cageless environment the Metrozoo has many species rarely found elsewhere in America including Bengal Tigers, Kangaroos and Giraffes. Alternatively, the Miami Seaquarium has whales, sea lions, sharks and alligators among its many aquatic species. Parrot Jungle Island has many species of birds flying free as well as animals that include an albino alligator.
