Holidays in America

America Main Guide | Places to visit

The United States of America (USA) is the world's most powerful nation. Most of it is located between Canada and Mexico on the North American continent. Alaska and Hawaii are both part of the USA but separated from it geographically – in the case of Hawaii by several thousand kilometres of ocean.

In all this area lives a population about five times as large as that of the United Kingdom. This means that away from the great cities there are regions which are very sparsely populated.

The USA is a very big place, and in order to effectively administer so much territory considerable authority is given to individual states. This means that local laws can vary considerably, and social customs may be very different in some paces – especially where there are strong influences from minority groups integrated into American society. Visiting the USA can be a very different experience each time if you go to a different area.
