Marmaris is the largest resort in Turkey. Nestled between mountains and a natural bay, the town has never lost the charm of its twisty streets despite embracing modern culture and first-class amenities.
Turkey has a great many sites of historical interest, some of them dating back thousands of years to the ancient empires of the Hittites and Phrygians. Some sites are quite rugged, so sensible footwear is a good idea if you plan to visit the ruins. Many mosques also have a long history and are well worth a look, though appropriate courtesy is required. Visitors should avoid entering mosques during prayer time and ensure they are suitably dressed. Shoes should be removed and women should cover their hair and arms. Shorts and short skirts are also inappropriate.
Marmaris is not noted for excellent beaches, though they are certainly good enough. Some hotels have private beaches which have been improved with imported sand, and there are good beaches nearby if you have access to transport.
Accommodation and Food
Accommodation in Marmaris is plentiful and varied, as might be expected in such a large resort. There are impressive 5-star hotels and inexpensive guest houses to choose from
The resort features a wide range of restaurants serving international cuisine (English, Chinese and Indian, among others) as well as more traditional Turkish dishes. Seafood is very popular; many restaurants serve very fresh fish caught locally. Although Turkey is an Islamic country, alcohol is available. Local beers and wines are good, and Raki (an aniseed flavoured spirit) is a Turkish tradition.
Activities
Marmaris offers a wealth of things to do. In addition to nightlife and watersports, visitors can enjoy to local scenery, wildlife and historic attractions on jeep safaris, coach and boat tours. The region has a long history with many unique features. Among them are the Virgin Mary's house, where the mother of Jesus is said to have lived out her later years, and the ancient city of Ephesus.
There is a market on Fridays, and the rest of the week there are plenty of stores and smaller shops in addition to the bazaar. Haggling is a way of life in Turkey which is either great fun or a little tiresome depending upon your outlook. Local specialities include carpets, leather, ceramics and jewellery. Designer-label clothes are cheap, but be careful if you want to avoid fakes.
Watersports are popular. There are several centres offering diving, water skiing, jet skis, para-gliding, windsurfing and other activities. Haggling is a national institution, so be prepared to discuss a price rather than just taking what is advertised.
Marmaris is large enough to have not one but two main nightlife districts. Known as Long Beach and The Bar District, these two areas have many bars and clubs close by one another, and are always very lively. For those with different tastes, there are restaurants where you can dine in comfort while watching traditional Turkish dancers. Some of the dances have a Russian influence and involve a great deal of leaping recklessly about! There are also comedy and drag clubs.
