Altinkum lies on the western, Aegean, coast of Turkey. The climate is typically Mediterranean, ranging from around 13-15ºC in winter to upwards of 30ºC in summer. Turkey's coastal waters gave us the word 'Turquoise' for their glorious colour, and as if that wasn't enough, Altinkum translates as 'Golden Sands'.
Turkey has a great many sites of historical interest, some of them dating back thousands of years to the ancient empires of the Hittites and Phrygians. Some sites are quite rugged, so sensible footwear is a good idea if you plan to visit the ruins. Many mosques also have a long history and are well worth a look, though appropriate courtesy is required. Visitors should avoid entering mosques during prayer time and ensure they are suitably dressed. Shoes should be removed and women should cover their hair and arms. Shorts and short skirts are also inappropriate.
Altinkum has three good beaches and is well suited to those seeking a relaxing beach holiday. There are also watersports on offer in addition to two waterparks. For those seeking a culture and history, there are many fascinating historical sites nearby.
The resort is popular with British visitors, though many Turkish families take their holidays there too.
Accommodation and Food
Altinkum has a range of hotels and other accommodation available, ranging from 5-star luxury hotels to more modest establishments. Apartments and studios are also available. Self-catering is no problem with supermarkets and shops available nearby.
The resort features a wide range of restaurants serving international cuisine (Indian, English and Chinese) as well as more traditional Turkish dishes. Some restaurants feature entertainment as well as food.
Activities
The beaches are an obvious attraction, and for the more active visitor there are watersports including jet-skis and banana boats. Boat trips to various destinations are also available.
Four km from Altinkum lies the town of Didim, which dates from 300BC. Here, visitors can see the Temple of Apollo. This was once the home of an oracle famed throughout the Mediterranean and retains much of its ancient wonder.
History buffs will also want to visit Ephesus, the most intact ancient city in the Mediterranean. The Temple of Ephesus was one of the Wonders of the ancient world. The Ephesus Festival of Culture and Art is held in a renovated amphitheatre in May each year.
Other popular destinations from Altinkum include Bodrum, a modern resort featuring a Crusader castle and Afrodisias, a Roman city. For those wanting to range farther afield, there is a ferry to Bodrum every day, and from Bodrum it is possible to take a boat to Rhodes or Kos.
Altinkum offers a good choice for shoppers. In addition to the supermarkets there is a selection of shops in town. Alternatively, there is a weekly market on Saturdays, and a more lively one in nearby Milas on Tuesdays.
Night life is varied and will suit most tastes. There are discos, bars and restaurants to choose from, plus karaoke, British pubs and a variety of night clubs.
