Torremolinos is located 7km to the west of Malaga in Andalusia, a region of southern mainland Spain. Andalusia offers a range of attractions to suit all tastes, from beaches and hot weather to centuries of culture and history.

Andalusia is steeped in history. Most towns and cities in the region have historic attractions dating from the Moorish occupation. Spectacular palaces include the Alcazar and Alhambra. Among the other attractions for history buffs are the world's largest Gothic church (Seville Cathedral) and the tomb of Christopher Columbus. The region also boasts spectacular countryside in the mountains to the north.

Torremolinos was the first resort in the Costa del Sol to be developed in the 1960s. Development has continued ever since, creating a mix of styles. The resort is mainly famous for its beaches, which are excellent. Vast numbers of trees and flowerbeds make a colourful and fascinating natural contrast to the town's streets and hotels. On the outskirts of town there are forests with barbecue facilities.

Torremolinos is popular with younger visitors, who principally come to party. However, this is mainly during the summer. At other times of the year the resort becomes more laid-back and friendlier, more 'Spanish' in character.

The town centre is pedestrian-only and contains a great many shops. Elsewhere in town, the district of El Bajondillo retains the character of the original fishing village. It contains a range of restaurants and little shops, and gives access to the beaches.

For those wanting to be a little more active, a walk along the promenade offers many sights worth seeing, including spectacular rock formations and the historic fishing village of La Carihuela.

Peace and quiet can be had in the El Calvario district, which is less frequented by tourists. Visitors can hide away here from the bustle and enjoy a meal or a drink in comfortable, relaxing surroundings.

Accommodation and Food

Accommodation ranges from the fairly basic to the rather splendid. Some hotels are close to the beach; others are on the other side of town. Some hotels can be rather noisy on party nights.

Other accommodation is available around town most takes the form of apartment complexes but there are also many villas available for rent.

Torremolinos offers a range of cuisine including French, Italian, English and of course Spanish dishes. Fresh fish bars are a tradition dating form the days when Torremolinos was a sleepy fishing village. Some of those in town date from the 1960s, before the village became a resort, and still sell their traditional wares. The village of La Carihuela is renowned for its seafood restaurants, which are found among traditional waterside cottages.

Activities

Torremolinos offers an excellent beach holiday, but there is so much more on offer than that. Watersports are popular as you might expect, and range from pedal boats to jet skis. The Marina has a number of bars and restaurants. It is one of the main centres of nightlife in Torremolinos.

There is also a crocodile park in Torremolinos, allowing visitors to get close to over 200 crocodiles, some of which weigh 500 kilos! The park also has a children's mini-zoo with more cuddly animals. Another nearby resort, Fuengirola, also boasts an impressive zoo. Designed to resemble the natural conditions of the animals as closely as possible, the zoo has no cages as such and relies on natural barriers in many cases. Bulletproof glass is used to allow visitors to get closer to the crocodiles than anyone really should want to! The zoo also remains open until 1AM to allow the nocturnal wildlife to be observed. The zoo also has several themed restaurants.

There are several historic cities within easy reach. Seville and Granada are particularly worth a visit with their ancient buildings and excellent shopping facilities. Granada boasts an excellent science museum whilst Seville is home to the Isla Magica theme park, which is based on the theme of 16 th century colonial adventure.

If the heat gets a bit much, you can go caving. There are many caves in the region, some suitable for family visits and some challenging to the experienced potholer. Chasm GESM in the Sierra de Tolox is 1090 metres deep and is the third deepest in the world. It is still being explored. Other cave systems are set up for walk-in visits suitable for children.
