Holidays in Sa Coma

Spain Main Guide | Majorca Main Guide

Sa Coma is a purpose-built resort that lies right in the heart of the popular east coast of Majorca, sandwiched between lively Cala Millor and the restaurant-strewn seafront of S'Illot. Sa Coma itself is largely frequented by British families, most opting for self-catering style accommodation. The resort establishments cater particularly well for children, who make the most of the wide sandy beach with its broad shallow shelf of clear, blue water.

Sightseeing in Sa Coma

The more energetic visitors can make the climb up to the medieval watchtower on the headland at Punta de n'Amer. This climb is well worth the 45-minute walk for the beautiful view afforded from the top, where there is also a café providing refreshments. Also popular are several sight-seeing boat trips and excursions to attractions on the island including the Caves of Ham and Drac, where stalactites, stalagmites and an underground lake await the visitor. The nearby town of S'Illot can be reached on foot, while a tourist tram connects Sa Coma with Cala Millor and the attractions available there.

Sa Coma Beaches

Sa Coma's beautiful beach has 'Blue Flag' status for cleanliness, water quality and safety. The beach is fronted by a wide promenade lined with restaurants, bars and shops, many of them British owned.

Shopping in Sa Coma

Sa Coma and the neighboring resorts have plentiful shops and boutiques selling souvenirs and tourist essentials. Families and groups on self-catering holidays will find a good selection of food at the Caprabo hypermarket on the Avinguda de les Palmeres. For a traditional market take the bus to the nearby town of Son Servera on a Friday morning for great bargains and a selection of local handicrafts.

Activities in Sa Coma

There is lots to do in Sa Coma and the nearby area as well as spend time on the beach, although this is the main reason most families choose to come to Sa Coma. As well as a range of water sports (equipment and pedalo boats are available for hire along the promenade) there are several 18-hole golf courses, tennis and squash courts, horse-riding, mini-golf, bowling, go-carting, and bicycling facilities. Children especially enjoy the Golf Paradis 54-hole mini golf course set among beautiful fountains, waterfalls and palm trees. Another big bonus for the children is the resort's proximity to Cala Millor's large safari park, where gazelles, ostriches, apes and elephants are among the animals that roam in a simulated natural environment and can be viewed from a safari bus.

Being a family resort, the nightlife in Sa Coma is not wild, entertainment being mainly hotel based. The neighboring town of Cala Millor offers a more lively after-dark scene for those interested. The only disco in the Sa Coma is Estrumbols, at S'Illot. One of the most popular evening spots is Crazy Monkeys, a relaxed Spanish-style cocktail bar.

Culture in Sa Coma

The ancient hilltop town of Arta has been occupied for about 3,000 years, and today welcomes visitors to the remains of its Bronze Age settlement at Ses Paisses, just outside the town in a grove of olive, carob and oak trees. Arta presents a picturesque sight from the Santuari de Sant Salvador, the chapel-shrine on top of the hill, with its bleached rooftops spilling down the hillside below the battlements of a Moorish fortress.

Situated in the hills, towards the north east of Mallorca, Pollensa is a peaceful old town that has been largely unaffected by tourism. The town was established a few miles inland to protect against any sudden pirate attacks; its harbor, Puerto Pollensa, was left as an unprotected outpost.

Food in Sa Coma

Sa Coma offers a varied selection of great restaurants. Hearty British food is the popular staple served at Jay Jays. BiBaBo café and music bar on the S'Illot front mixes the best of British with some Spanish dishes for families wanting the best of both worlds. The top restaurant in town for Spanish and Majorcan cuisine is Lago.
