Holidays in Puerto Rico

Spain Main Guide | Gran Canaria Main Guide

Puerto Rico is located on the southwestern side of Gran Canaria, capital of the Canary Isles. The island has very distinct weather zones; drier in the south and cooler in the north. Average temperatures range from 15ºC in winter to 25ºC in the summer. Sunshine is near-constant.

The capital, Las Palmas, hosts a 4-week carnival in February and has an opera season in March and April. The June to September period is particularly popular with younger visitors coming for the party scene.

Gran Canaria has a good bus service throughout the island. A discount card is available from many shops for those intending to make extensive use of local transport. Alternatively, car hire is available. With several other resorts just minutes from Puerto Rico by car, hiring a vehicle may be a good way to see more of the island.

Puerto Rico nestles between the hills and the warm sea, with two excellent beaches. The town centre has a variety of shops, bars and restaurants on offer. Whilst not a famous 'party town' like Playa des Ingles down the coast, Puerto Rico has a vibrant nightlife. The Marina to the west of the town has many luxury yachts and offers a range of watersports.

The main attraction of Puerto Rico is of course the chance to take it easy on the beaches in glorious weather, but there is enough variety to keep visitors of all ages interested.

Accommodation and Food

Accommodation in Puerto Rico takes the form of hotels and apartment complexes to suit a range of budgets Many complexes have their own pool, games room and shops. Some hotels have entertainment available in addition to pools, games rooms and restaurants.

Although Puerto Rico has a number of eating places, Puerto Mogan is 5 minutes away by car and offers greater variety. The tapas bars of Arginugin are also worth a visit. If you do want to stay in town there is a variety of international food available including good steak, Chinese and Indian cuisine.

Activities

As might be expected from an island surrounded by warm, clear waters, watersports are popular in Puerto Rico. The resort has a sailing school and water-skiing school, while nearby Puerto de Mogan and Maspalomas both have diving schools. Conditions are good for windsurfing almost anywhere on Gran Canaria. There is also a water park for those who just can't get wet enough.

For fishing enthusiasts, boat trips are available from the port form Monday to Saturday aboard large catamaran vessels. In addition to sport fishing, the trip offers the chance to see dolphins and whales as well as flying fish and Atlantic turtles. Boat trips also run between Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogan. Dolphins can often be seen in the water.

Many visitors come to Gran Canaria for the golfing facilities. There are several on the island.

The nearest is a par-73 course in Maspalomas.

The resort has two commercial centres which offer a range of shops, bars and eating places for those who just want to relax and wander around.
