Holidays in Puerto de la Cruz

Spain Main Guide | Tenerife Main Guide

Puerto de la Cruz is located on the island of Tenerife, the largest of the Canaries. The island's main attractions are the virtually constant sunshine and warm weather. The most popular times to visit are December to February, when the heat is less intense. The northern side of the island is a little cooler and has more rainfall than the south.

There are several resorts on Tenerife, each with its own characteristics. Puerto de la Cruz is a coastal resort situated in an old harbour town dating back to 1620. Lying on the north coast of the island, the town is surrounded by lush countryside, with two beaches of black volcanic sand fringed by palm trees.

The town has a unique atmosphere with its cobbled streets and many gardens contrasting with modern shops and hotels in the newer end of town.

Accommodation and Food

A range of accommodation is available, from a 5-star hotel with two swimming pools and four restaurants to more modest establishments. Apartments are readily available, with bed and breakfast establishments much less common. Many of the hotels and apartment complexes have their own swimming pools and other facilities such as gyms, restaurants and bars.

With a local population of around 30,000, Puerto de la Cruz is large enough to support a range of restaurants including traditional Canarian and Spanish establishments as well as those serving international cuisine.

Activities

The town of Puerto de la Cruz is very attractive and has many historical buildings to visit, such as the Church of Nuestra Senora de la Pena and the Castle of San Felipe.

There are no less than eight swimming pools in Puerto de la Cruz, plus an array of bars and restaurants to relax in. The gardens are well worth a visit; particularly the Botanical Gardens which have plants from Africa, South America and Australia.

Puerto de la Cruz also boasts the Loro Parque, which has over 200 species of parrots and other animals on display.

For those wishing to venture further afield, a trip to the Teide National Park is well worth the trip. The island's dramatic volcanic landscape is dominated by the highest of Spain's mountains, Mount Teide. Despite the high temperatures (22ºC to 30ºC or more in summer), Mount Teide has snow for part of the year.

Guided walks are available (book the day before) or visitors can simply take the cable car to the top and enjoy the spectacular view. On a clear day it is possible to see other islands of the Canaries: La Gomera, El Hierro, la Palma and Gran Canaria.

Puerto de Santiago, down the coast, is worth the visit for those willing to hire a car. The port offers water sports including parascending and diving, and boat trips to watch dolphins and whales. Would-be sea dogs can take a trip on the Flipper Uno, a reproduction 18 th-century sailing ship that sails daily.
