Holidays in Maspalomas
Spain Main Guide | Gran Canaria Main Guide
The resort of Maspalomas is located on the southern tip of Gran Canaria, capital of the Canary Isles. The island has very distinct weather zones; drier in the south and cooler in the north. Average temperatures range from 18ºC in winter to 25ºC in the summer. Sunshine is near-constant.
The capital, Las Palmas, hosts a 4-week carnival in February and has an opera season in March and April. The June to September period is particularly popular with younger visitors coming for the party scene.
Gran Canaria has a good bus service throughout the island. A discount card is available from many shops for those intending to make extensive use of local transport. Alternatively, car hire is available. With several other resorts just minutes from Puerto Rico by car, hiring a vehicle may be a good way to see more of the island.
Maspalomas, like neighbouring Playa des Ingles, is a lively destination popular with those who want to party, or anyone who likes to enjoy the sunshine on a sandy beach. The town offers vibrant nightlife as well as theme parks and other attractions.
Maspalomas has one of the best beaches on Gran Canaria – in other worlds, one of the best in the world. Camel rides on the vast area of sand dunes are popular, and of course many visitors just want to soak up the sun. The beaches are themed, with some areas mainly catering to families, some to gay visitors. There is a designated nudist area.
There are plenty of bars and shops close to the beaches, so visitors can be sure they will not miss a moment's sunbathing.
The Canaries are a popular destination for golfers. Maspalomas has an 18-hole par 73 course, and there are several other courses on the island. Other sports are also available including rock climbing and tennis.
Accommodation and Food
Like other resorts on Gran Canaria, Maspalomas offers a variety of accommodation. Villas and apartments range from small studios with a single bedroom to large villas sleeping 8 or more. Visitors can also rent private apartments; these are holiday homes belonging to people who have bought them privately and rent out the apartment when it is not in use. Private apartments tend to be quieter and more suited to families than those coming to the island to party.
Maspalomas offers a range of eating opportunities, from pizza and pasta to Tex-Mex. International and traditional Spanish cuisine is available in town and along the beach front.
Activities
For those who want to party, Maspalomas has a wealth of bars featuring live music, the newest dance tracks and entertainment every night. There is something for every taste; from salsa to soul, by way of rock & roll and reggae.
There are three water parks on Gran Canaria. One of them, Ocean park, is actually in Maspalomas. It has 13 slides and a wave pool plus a shopping area and restaurants. Just up the road is Aquasur, a larger park with no less than 33 slides! Aquasur also has mini-golf, gardens and restaurants – a whole day out in one area. On the same road as Aquasur lies Palmitos Park, which has many species of animals and birds among its gardens. There is also a large leisure park, Holiday World.
For those seeking a little culture, a visit to Mundo Aborigen offers a chance to see the traditional Guanche (the original inhabitants of the Canary Isles) way of life in a faithful reconstruction of a traditional village. Mundo Aborigen is set above the most spectacular gorge on the island.
Heading inland, visitors can experience the fabulous scenery of the island and find little slices of history in the form of ancient churches and monuments. Organised excursions are available, or you can hire a car and take your own time exploring.
Back at the waterside, a range of watersports are available at the beach and in nearby resorts. There is a diving school in Maspalomas while Puerto Rico, just up the coast, has a sailing school and water-skiing school. Just a little further along the coast, Puerto de Mogan has a diving school. Conditions are good for windsurfing almost anywhere on Gran Canaria.
Boat trips are available from the Puerto Rico from Monday to Saturday aboard large catamaran vessels. In addition to sport fishing, the trip offers the chance to see dolphins and whales as well as flying fish and Atlantic turtles. Boat trips also run between Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogan. Dolphins can often be seen in the water.
