Fuengirola is located on the Costa del Sol in southern mainland Spain. Most visitors arrive via Malaga airport, with a transfer time of about 20 minutes. The nearby resorts of Torremolinos, Torreblanca and Arroyo de la Miel can be easily reached by train.

Fuengirola has several kilometres of beaches, overlooked by hotels and apartment blocks. The area has recently been landscaped, with flowerbeds added to the widened promenade. Many Spaniards own holiday apartments in Fuengirola, a further seal of approval.

The town plays host to two fiestas during the year. In July there is the feast of the Virgin del Carman, while in October the Feria del Rosario is fuelled by dry sherry; the fiesta lasts for an entire week. The Verbena Boquetillo, an open-air party, runs from 22nd to 25th June

With 8km of beaches and 320 days of sunshine a year, Fuengirola is an excellent destination for a beach or pool holiday.

Accommodation and Food

Accommodation ranges from the comfortable to the luxurious. The more expensive hotels offer facilities including riding, golf and tennis in addition to a swimming pool.

The variety of food on offer in Fuengirola is impressive. In addition to Tapas and Mediterranean shellfish dishes, a visitor can find game restaurants plus Mexican, English and Italian food. For the self-caterer, there is an array of supermarkets and shops. Prices are generally good.

Fuengirola boasts an array of bars, some of which are themed. English pubs, music bars, a 'Beetle Bar' with a Beetle car as a DJ booth… there is even a venue themed to resemble a fish bowl!

Activities

Like most coastal resorts, Fuengirola offers a range of watersports. There is also an aqua park for those who don't want to stay dry longer than they have to. For the evenings, the town has a number of music bars with something for everyone: Jazz, Rock & Roll… and karaoke if you really must! There are also several discos catering to the current club scene and fans of retro sounds.

For the shopaholic, Fuengirola offers some unique experiences. On Tuesdays the town plays host to a vibrant street market, while Saturday is boot sale day.

The town can be explored on foot or by horse-drawn carriage. Neighbouring Los Boliches is ideal if you want to see what the area looked like in times past. Los Boliches still retains the feeling of a small fishing village with narrow streets and small local shops. If you want to get about a bit more, there are direct buses to Malaga, Marbella, Estepona, Algeciras and Mijas.

For those seeking local colour, there is a classical & sacred music association which rehearses every Monday from September to May. The International Music Society meets on a Wednesday and welcomes music lovers.

The Good Companions Club meets on a Tuesday to decide on excursions and events. Its members organise raffles, quizzes and excursions to places of interest in the region. Visitors are welcomed. On Thursdays it is the turn of the Fuengirola and District Society, which also organises events for its members and guests. Or you can take a guided walk with the Costa Del Sol Field Club.

Fuengirola also boasts an impressive zoo. Designed to resemble the natural conditions of the animals as closely as possible, the zoo has no cages as such and relies on natural barriers in many cases. Bulletproof glass is used to allow visitors to get closer to the crocodiles than anyone really should want to! The zoo also remains open until 1AM to allow the nocturnal wildlife to be observed. The zoo also has several themed restaurants.
