Holidays in Spain

Spain Main Guide | Places to visit | Things to do

Spain is one of the most visually spectacular and varied countries in Europe. From the great beaches to fantastic nightlife, Moorish monuments to wonderful cuisine. Spain is a land of contrasts so you may want to take some time out to explore a bit when you've topped up your suntan.

The cities are each unique and highly individual; the country's monuments change from one region to the next, reflecting Spain's long history and the landscape changes from the green of Galicia and Asturias in the north through the arid, high plains of Castile to the deserts of Estremadura and the beaches of the Costa del Sol.

Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community and joined the EU in 1986.
