Cheap holidays in Lake Garda

Italy Main Guide | Lake Garda Main Guide

Lake Garda is the largest and most popular of the 'Italian Lakes' holiday destinations. Formed in the last ice age, it lies in the north of Italy about 100km from Milan. The lake is wide at the southern end and narrows as it runs roughly northeast towards the Alps.

Around the lake are many towns, especially at the southern end. The region has been a popular destination for over two thousand years. Important Romans came here for relaxation. Today the area is popular with a variety of people. Some come for an active holiday swimming, walking and cycling; others want a less strenuous time during their stay. Either way Lake Garda offers a range of attractions.

The Lake Garda region is close enough to Milan, Verona and Venice to allow trips to visit these famous cities during your stay. There is plenty to do in the region however. Among the towns and villages around the lake are Garda, with many historical attractions, Bardollino, Moniga and Peschiera, which has three riding schools and other good sports facilities.

Accommodation And Food

The towns around Lake Garda have a range of hotels and other accommodation available. In some cases a car is necessary as the hotel is a little way outside of town. Facilities such as pools and air conditioning are not universal, but there is sufficient variety that you will be able to find what you want. Alternatives to hotels include apartments, farmhouses offering accommodation and camp sites.

Italian cuisine is wonderful. Many people are only familiar with pizza and pasta dishes, but there are some delights awaiting discovery if you wish to be a little more adventurous. Particularly good are Agnello Saporito, a lamb dish, and Pollo Milanese which is essentially fried breadcrumbed chicken.

As well as traditional Italian food (why go to Italy and eat anything else?), international cuisine is readily available. Each town has its own selection of restaurants and cafes to choose from.

Activities

Lake Garda offers a range of opportunities for watersports, though what is on offer does depend on where you stay. For the more energetic visitor there is sailing, windsurfing, diving and swimming. If you prefer to relax then a boat trip on the lake is ideal.

The nearby countryside is worth exploring on foot, by car or on a bike. If you prefer a little more structure to your ramblings, guided trips into the Dolomites are available. Visits to the various towns and villages around the lake, by boat, bus or car, are well worth the time. Each has its own attractions. These include the castle at Malcesine, the church of St Nicolo at Lazise and the villa of Gabriele d'Annunzio, poet and adventurer. For kids there are two good theme parks; Gardaland and Canevaworld. Both offer a range of watery and dry fun for all the family as well as shops and restaurants.

The towns and villages offer a range of nightlife and shopping opportunities ranging from local markets to large complexes. Nightlife is fairly sedate but there are nightclubs and live music to suit a range of tastes as well as pleasant pubs where you can meet the locals over a few drinks.
