Bali is one of the islands of the Republic of Indonesia. It is a fairly large island, 140km by 80km, and has several tall volcanoes which create a dramatic landscape. The climate is tropical, with excellent beaches of white sand.

Bali is popular with Australian visitors as well as Europeans. Although there are still some reservations about Bali as a holiday destination as a result of terrorist activity, the island is once more increasing in popularity.

Bali has several good resorts, each with its own characteristics.

Jimbaran Bay , in the southwest, is close to the airport and has some of the best beaches on Bali.

Kuta is popular for surfing and is close to the airport. It has a good party atmosphere, with inexpensive hotels and plenty of nightspots.

Lovina on the northern coast of Bali is popular for its dry and warm climate. It has a good beach of black sand and a nice relaxed atmosphere.

Nusa Dua , on the southern tip of Bali, has good beaches. It is popular for golf, swimming and non-motorized water sports. Visitors seeking water skiing, jet skis etc can find them just a few minutes' drive away at Tanjung Benoa.

Sanur has a long history and was the site of Bali's first hotel. Today it is a thriving resort with a more relaxed atmosphere than other areas of the island. The beach is good for swimming as it is protected by an offshore reef.

Accommodation and Food

Bali's resorts offer a range of accommodation to suit all budgets. Many hotels have swimming pools and other amenities including sports facilities, bars and restaurants.

International cuisine is readily available on Bali. Food is relatively cheap, mainly due to competition for business. Many restaurants serve a mix of Western and Indonesian cuisine. Among the specialties available are Sudanese, Spanish, French, Japanese, Italian, Indian and Greek. Traditional Balinese duck and pork dishes are available almost everywhere.

Activities

Bali is sometimes known as the 'Island of Ten Thousand Temples' for its rich history and large numbers of religious buildings. Visitors can explore the current and ruined temples while enjoying the spectacular scenery and wonderful climate. The Sea Temple of Tanah Lot is particularly worth a visit, as is the Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave) near Bedulu.

The people of Bali are friendly and welcoming to visitors. Their fascinating culture is quite unique and can be experienced through ceremonies and dance performances held all over the island. Some hotels have dance performances every night. Balinese crafts are also very popular with visitors, who can spend hours choosing jewelry, carvings and paintings created by skilled local crafters.

At the capital, Denpasar, there is a museum and a new art centre, plus the chance to go shopping or see traditional Balinese dance at the Konservatori Kerawitan.

From Sanur, a boat ride or a short walk at low tide will take you to Serangan Island (also called Turtle Island), where turtles are kept in special pens. Twice a yea the island hosts a massive thanksgiving ceremony which attracts thousands of attendees.
