Holidays in Stalis
Greece Main Guide | Crete Main Guide
Stalis is located on the northern coast of Crete to the east of Heraklion. The climate is hot and sunny on the coast, usually with a refreshing breeze coming off the sea. Crete's coastal plains rise rapidly to rugged mountains inland, where it is cooler.
The resorts of this stretch of coast more or less run into one another. Stalis lies between the resorts of Malia and Hersonissos but is somewhat quieter, offering the best of both worlds – exciting nightlife within easy reach and a quieter place to relax. Stalis is a good choice for families or couples who may not want to party 24 hours a day.
Stalis has a good selection of bars, restaurants and shops beside a long sandy beach that, while busy, does not get as crowded as those in neighbouring resorts.
Accommodation and Food
Stalis offers a range of hotels and apartments to suit all budgets. Most hotels are close to the beach and have air conditioning as standard, though it is worth checking. The area can get very busy in the summer high season, so it may be wise to book early.
There are large numbers of Greek restaurants in Stalis serving traditional Cretan and Greek food. International cuisine is available, from Chinese and traditional English fare to fast food. The bars and pubs also reflect a European theme – there are Irish pubs and cocktail bars as well as Greek tavernas.
Activities
Stalis has a great climate and a fine beach, with bars and shops close by. If that isn't enough you can find plenty of other things to do including watersports, scuba diving, boat cruises and fishing trips.
If you want to explore inland there are several options. Horse riding is available, or for something more adventurous take a jeep safari into the mountains. Renting a car or motorbike is a good way to get around and see the island. There are several rental firms in town, but beware of the twisty mountain roads.
Walking in the mountains is also popular, though it pays to be prepared. It can be cold or foggy in the mountains and it is easy to get lost on the less well-defined paths.
Heraklion, just along the coast, is worth a visit if you want to go shopping or see some Cretan culture. The Heraklion Archeological Museum contains a fine collection of ancient Minoan art, while the Historical Museum has exhibits dating back to the first century AD. The Museum for the Battle of Crete and National Resistance is dedicated to the struggles of 1941-45 when Cretans fought for their freedom in World War Two. The Museum of Natural History displays samples of flora and fauna from all across the island. There are also several historic churches and temples in Heraklion.
From Heraklion you can join excursions to various laces of interest including the Minoan Palace at Knossos, just a few km south of Heraklion. It was here that, according to legend, Theseus slew the Minotaur.
