Holidays in Kos Town

Greece Main Guide | Kos Main Guide

Kos Town is the capital of Kos, the third largest of the Greek Dodecanese islands. The island has an excellent, sunny climate. The island is very popular with holidaymakers, offering a mix of nightlife and quiet beauty that will appeal to everyone.

Kos has been inhabited since prehistoric times when the Minoans, Achaeans and Dorians built their towns and cities. The island was the birthplace of Hippocrates, father of medicine. Later, the island was influenced by the Romans, Venetians and Crusaders. These civilisations have all left behind traces of their culture.

Kos Town itself still shows signs of these various cultures. The remains of Roman baths and an amphitheatre can still be seen, and the 15 th-century castle built by the Knights of St John to guard the port still stands.

Kos Town has been extensively developed in recent years, with new facilities and apartment complexes growing up along the coast to north and south. The beach at Kos Town is not especially good, but there are better ones just a short bus ride away.

Accommodation and Food

Kos Town offers a range of accommodation. Apartments, studios and a range of hotels are available to suit all budgets. Many hotels and complexes have their own swimming pool and other extras such as sports facilities.

Kos Town has plenty of places to eat, serving dishes ranging from fast food to traditional Greek cuisine. Kos is very cosmopolitan, receiving visitors from all over the world, and it is not hard to find whatever you fancy.

Activities

Kos Town hosts the only museum on the island; the Archeological Museum of Kos. The museum displays a range of artefacts including mosaics and statues dating from ancient and Roman times. Find out how these important civilisations made their mark on the ancient Mediterranean world.

Kos also has some very impressive churches and other religious buildings, some dating from as early as the 5 th Century. Not only are they interesting in their own right, these places are an ideal location for a peaceful or romantic walk, offering relaxation away from the bustle of the resorts.

A good way to see the island is to hire a bicycle and tour wherever you like. There are over 4000 bicycles available, so finding one should not be a problem. Head into the interior of the island and explore the peaceful villages and lush greens of the spectacular scenery, or look for souvenirs and gifts. Kos produces excellent local pottery and hand-woven rugs.

In Kos Town you can visit the Castle of the Knights, constructed in the 14 th Century by the Knights of St John, or play a variety of sports. There are also plenty of opportunities for socialising. Spend a pleasant afternoon drinking coffee in a café and watching the world go by, or party all night in one of the many nightclubs.

Kos offers a range of watersports including water skiing, paragliding and wind surfing, and there is a scuba diving centre for those wanting to take advantage of the clear Mediterranean waters. Alternatively, boat trips are available. Visit other islands nearby or even to Turkey.
