Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian islands, and the sixth largest of all the Greek islands. It is not as busy as places like Corfu, and is well suited to a relaxing holiday. The island boasts dramatic scenery crowned by Mount Ainos. The rugged landscape falls away to the sea in dramatic cliffs at some points. In other area there are excellent beaches.

The capital, Argostoli, is a busy and modern town with good opportunities for shopping or sitting in a nice café watching the world go by. The town also has several historic buildings and museums to visit.

Argostoli was heavily damaged like many other towns in the area by the 1953 earthquake. Most of the town was rebuilt, and few features of pre-1953 Argostoli remain. The town's waterfront is very attractive. Much of the island's fishing fleet docks there, unloading the catch in the morning. Fresh fish and seafood is popular in the waterfront restaurants and tavernas.

The Drapano bridge – actually a causeway – is a good place for an evening walk. Loggerhead turtles can often be seen in the waters of the harbour. There is a ferry to Lixouri every hour if you feel the need to get about a bit more. Argostoli has a good shopping precinct, which is closed to traffic. This is perhaps just as well since the town centre can become very crowded.

There are several resorts on the island, each with its own charm and unique attractions.

Assos is one of the most attractive villages on Kefalonia. Much of it was destroyed in the 1953 earthquake but remains of the original Venetian architecture can still be seen. There is an old Venetian fortress nearby.

Fiskardo is the most northerly town on Kefalonia. It is former fishing village with a very attractive harbour. Boat trips along the coast are popular.

Katelios is a quiet and relaxed resort best suited to people wanting to get away from it all. It is located in the southeast of the island.

Lassi is the most popular of Kefalonia's resorts. It was purpose built as a resort and lies within easy reach of Argostoli on the coast road.

Lixouri is a traditional Greek town about 35km from Argostoli. It can be reached by car ferry from the capital. The resort is relaxed and quiet, suited to families and couples.

Sami is a pretty village on the northern side of the island.

Skala is a lively former fishing village with a long beach and backed by the mountains. The resort is mainly popular with families and couples.

Svoronata in the southwest of the island, close to the capital and Lassi. It is a very tranquil place with beautiful scenery. The village is about 1.5km from the beaches, which are very good and do not get crowded. The beaches are good for swimming since the water is very shallow for a long way out.

Accommodation and Food

Although Kefalonia receives a large number of visitors every year it rarely becomes crowded. There is a good range of accommodation available in the many resorts including high quality and budget hotels, apartments and studios.

Traditional Greek food is common on Kefalonia, but international cuisine is widely available. Most restaurants are used to a cosmopolitan clientele and serve dishes that will appeal to even highly conservative palates. Children's menus containing staples such as chicken nuggets and sausages are not uncommon, even in restaurants serving quality Greek cuisine.

Activities

Kefalonia has a lot of offer. For the more active visitor, a walk intro the hills to experience the scenery close up is very rewarding, though it can be hard work. The Ainos National Park is dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of Kefalonia. It is possible to drive almost to the highest point of Mount Ainos, though the road is rather rough.

Another way to see the island is from horseback. The riding school at Lourdas Beach offers rides of 1-3 hours' duration and will tailor rides to the experience level of visitors. If you would rather see the underwater world, take a trip in a glass-bottomed boat from Skala.

Argostoli has a number of historic attractions. The best is actually about 5km away. It is the castle of Aghios Georgios (St George). Not only is it an interesting historic building in its own right but the views are spectacular. The castle has a history dating back to the 12 th Century, though the present castle dates from the 1500s. It has been held by the Byzantines, Franks, Turks and Venetians at various times. From the castle, it is a short trip to Kastro, whose cathedral was damaged by earthquakes on more than one occasion.

Other historical attractions on the island include the monastery of St Gerasimos, which is built over the cave where the island's patron saint lived. The cave is accessible from the monastery. The convent of St Andreas has been restored to become a museum. It contains 16 th century frescoes, religious vestments and a holy remnant of the saint.

The Drogarati Cave is also worth a visit. A natural cavern dating back about 150 million years, the cave has steps to allow easy access and is used for concerts due to its incredible natural acoustics.

Also underground, the lake of Melissani is a site of natural beauty. Little boats will take you into the far recesses of the cave to explore the caverns and grottos where in ancient times the god Pan was worshipped.

The villages and towns of the island also of course feature many fine shops and markets where you can browse for local produce and handicrafts, and an array of nice restaurants and cafes where you can pass a quiet hour or refresh yourself for whatever you plan to do next.
