Hersonissos is located on the North coast of Crete. The main city consists of several small villages and the main tourist destinations of Port Hersonissos, Anissaras and Old Hersonissos. Described as one of the more cosmopolitan destinations on Crete, Hersonissos has many late 20 th century restaurants, bars, clubs and hotels on the site of the ancient port, now the harbour area, which provide a healthy nightlife for younger visitors. An extensive and varied coastline provides every opportunity to enjoy the warm crystal clear waters and hot sandy beaches.

Things to do in Hersonissos

Sightseeing in Hersonissos

Hersonissos is close to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, the Minoan Palace of Knossos and the Minoan Palace of Malia. Regular buses run to Heraklion daily so getting there is easy. D aily cruises are organised to the neighbouring island of DIA and many other small islets and beaches off the coast. Hiring a car will see your sightseeing horizons expand considerably, a drive to the nearby villages of Ano Hersonissos and Koutouloufari will reveal well preserved traditional Cretan architecture. Avdou is also nearby if you enjoy a walk in the narrow streets of this traditional village, and another place of interest is the Lassithi Plateau, a beautiful plateau scattered with windmills.

Hersonissos Beaches

Hersonissos boasts a very varied coastline with white sandy beaches and cool refreshing seas . Limanakia to the North are a series of beaches scattered down the coast, some are quite small but the Southern beach is the most spacious. Lined with beach bars and scattered with sun loungers the sandy beach East of the port is the largest and busiest beach in Hersonissos, and closely followed by the beach West of the port is a great place to take in some of the faster paced beach life and water-sports. The beach of Star Beach Waterpark is great for sunbathing, water-sports, and even bunjee jumping. Coming further South, there are several smaller, pebbly beaches past the Lycnostatis Museum.

Shopping in Hersonissos

Hersonissos offers a wide variety of goods, from top designer label clothing to fine antiques and high quality leather goods. Shops are open  9 am-10 pm, all week long. Greece is well known for its original jewelery design and competive prices, although wine, embroideries, handicrafts, woven goods and art by locals from the neighboring villages are also available.

Activities in Hersonissos

When it comes to things to do, a visitor to Hersonissos could be overwhelmed. From relaxing on one of the hot beaches along the coast while the cool waves lap up the sand and cooling down with a visit to the fantastic Star Beach Waterpark, with its waterslides, swimming pools, jacuzzis, restaurants, mini golf, bunjee jumping and twilight foam parties to hiring a car and exploring some of the old villages to the South, your sure to enjoy your time. The beaches play host to the usual variety of water-sports, including water-skiing, paragliding and snorkeling. At night time the many bars and clubs in and around the harbour area spring to life, staying open until the early hours to entertain visitors.

Culture in Hersonissos

With Crete having such a rich history involving pirates, Turks and the Romans, there is plenty to see and do around Hersonissos. Old Hersonissos itself was formed when people moved further inland from the harbour of the original Hersonissos, mainly to avoid pirates who would come ashore. From Hersonissos, public transport is available to the Archaeological Museum of Herakleion, which houses the most important and representative finds of the Minoan civilization.

Food in Hersonissos

A visitor to Hersonissos will find that many fast food and takeaway outlets can be found around the beaches and harbour areas. These sell European type foods such as burgers, chips and pizzas. Moving away from the main tourist areas into the smaller villages and back streets is a good way to find restaurants and Greek tavernas serving up typical Greek dishes. With ingredients such as bread accommpanied by olives, lots of fresh fruit and raw vegetables, olive oil and red wine, these can often be a healthier alternative.
