Halkidiki lies to the southeast of Thessaloniki in Greece. It consists of three peninsulas (Athos, Kassandra and Sithonia) extending into the Aegean sea. The region has a lot of coast including many small islands, with wooded hills inland. The climate is Mediterranean with plenty of sunshine.

There are several resorts located on the peninsulas of Halkidiki. These have mostly grown up from fishing villages and have mostly been developed with great care. The result is a number of attractive resorts that blend in with the surroundings.

Halkidiki is very popular for its beaches, many of which have been awarded Blue Flags for quality. Watersports are available at many beaches, and dolphins come in close to the shore.

Halkidiki is quieter than places like Corfu and Crete. Nightlife is relatively sedate, though there are some lively areas, especially during July and August. Kalithea on the Kassandra Peninsula is the main centre for night life.

Accommodation And Food

The many resorts in Halkidiki offer a range of accommodation to suit all budgets. In most resorts, the main hotels are also centres for entertainment and night life. M ost hotels and aparthotels require gentlemen to wear long trousers to dinner. For the more rugged visitor, there are a number of camp sites around the region.

As you might expect, fish restaurants are common. Popular dishes include are red mullet, squid and octopus plus Fasolada, a bean soup. Fast food outlets of various kinds, grill houses and tavernas are also common.

Activities

Halkidiki is a very beautiful area with excellent scenery and lush vegetation. The views from high ground are well worth the effort. At the other extreme you can explore the Cave of Petrololna, which is an important archeological site as well as a fascinating complex of underground galleries. The region's long history can be discovered at the archeological museum at Polygyros, the capital of Halkidiki.

There are many excellent beaches along the 500km of coastline. Whether you want to relax and loaf about, or engage in strenuous watersports, you will be able to find a beach that suits you.

If you like to get out a bit more, you can get a water-taxi to one of the nearby islands and explore, or charter a yacht and go sailing. Heading inland, a trip to Thessaloniki is well worth it. The shopping is particularly good. Some of the villages in the region have good markets where you can find local crafts and souvenirs.
