Corfu is a Greek island lying 32km from the mainland. It is popular with a range of visitors. Some of the resorts on Corfu cater to those seeking a party vacation, while other areas are much more sedate. Corfu can be quite cold in the winter. July and August, on the other hand, can be extremely hot (30º and over). If you intend to be very active it might be worth visiting in the cooler months. As an island, Corfu has many kilometres of coasts and fine beaches. Inland there is beautiful countryside and quiet villages to explore.

The capital is Corfu town, which has been influenced by the British, French and Italians as well as, obviously, Greek culture. Corfu Town has a population of about 40,000. It has a number of museums and historical attractions including a small but very good archeological museum and a museum of ancient art.

Among the other features of Corfu Town are the 12 th- and 13 th-Century forts and the Spianada, a public square and park. The shopping in Corfu Town is very good. A wealth of local handicrafts can be found for sale, along with a rather unique kumquat liqueur. There are also some very good stores selling sculpture, art pieces, old jewellery or books and similar unusual items. If you like pottery and ceramics, there are plenty of outlets in town or you could visit the pottery workshop just north of Corfu town.

Corfu has several resorts, each with its own characteristics.

Agios Gordios is located about 25km from Corfu Town. It is a popular and busy resort with a range of watersports on offer. Agios Gordios is a little isolated from the rest of the island by mountainous terrain inland.

Arillas has good beaches of sand and pebbles and offers a range of watersports. It is quieter than some resorts and more suited to couples or families.

Benitses, which lies close to Corfu Town, has good nightlife but is leaving behind the 24-hour-party reputation it has earned in the past. Today the resort is popular with couples seeking a romantic holiday.

Dassia, just 1km from Ipsos, offers a wide range of watersports and entertainment in the evenings. Greek dancing is popular in the Tavernas.

Gouvia, close to the capital, has an international marina that was once a naval base. It combines excellent nightlife with beautiful countryside. Regular folklore performances are staged at a custom-built village.

Glyfada, lying on a wide bay backed by steep hills, has an excellent beach and watersports on offer. Nearby is the village of Pelekas.

Ipsos, 14km from Corfu Town, is one of the most popular resorts on Corfu. It offers watersports on the shingle beach and good nightlife in many bars and pubs along the main strip.

Kassiopi is another resort that grew up out of a fishing village. It lies about 40km from Corfu Town in the northeast corner of the island. The village is known for local handicrafts and there are Roman ruins nearby.

Kavos , the southernmost resort on Corfu, has the hottest nightlife on the island. The village has been converted into one large day-and-night party venue.

Messonghi on the east coast is a traditional Greek village with an excellent beach and good conditions for watersports.

Nissaki lies on the coast but is surrounded by cliffs and mountains giving it a degree of seclusion. It is well suited to families and couples seeking a relaxing holiday.

Paleokastritsa in the northwest offers watersports and good seafood restaurants. There is a 13 th-Centry monastery near the town, set in beautiful scenic surroundings.

Pelekas retains much of the traditional character of daily life but still manages to provide excellent modern facilities. There are excellent beaches nearby and the sea is shallow, making Pelekas an excellent place to go swimming safely

Roda has a long sand-and-shingle beach with a range of watersports on offer. Roda can be quite lively in the high season but caters to families as well as 24-hour-party lovers.

Sidari lies on the northwestern tip of the island about 40km from the capital. It has grown over the years from two villages flowing together to create a single resort.

St George lies on the southwest coast. It has 5km of excellent beaches and is well known for its windsurfing facilities. St George is popular with families and couples.

Accommodation and Food

A range of apartments and hotels are available on the island. Many inland areas are undeveloped but there is no problem getting somewhere to stay in the resorts or Corfu town. Many hotels have additional facilities such as swimming pools. Most hotel pools can be used for free, even by visitors not staying at the hotel.

Most population centres are quite cosmopolitan and offer a range of eating places to suit all tastes. It is not difficult to find English, Mexican, English and Chinese restaurants; some of which are quite big and can cater to large parties. Traditional Greek cuisine is of course also widely available, and eating follows the typical Greek pattern of a late lunch (after 2PM) and dinner very late (often after 10PM). Local food is good value for money.

Activities

As you might expect from an island with long coasts, Corfu offers a wide range of water sports including water skiing, paragliding and scuba diving. There is also a waterslide park for extra watery fun.

In addition to the range of water sports and the attractive beaches, it is possible to rent a boat and go exploring the coves – or head off up or down the coast. Boat rental is by the hour and includes fuel.

Exploring inland, Corfu has beautiful scenery and wildlife to discover, along with picturesque villages where you can see the traditional way of life unfolding as it always has. The Corfu Trail is maintained by volunteers. Walking the trail will lead visitors to many of the island's best sights and attractions.

The nightlife on Corfu is limited to the resorts and Corfu town; in these places you can find a good selection of bars and nightclubs offering music and karaoke, plus more traditional Greek tavernas for those seeking a quieter drink. Corfu town has numerous discos and clubs, and there is a casino just outside of town.
