Limassol is located on the southern coast of Cyprus. It is the second-largest of Cyprus' cities, with over 15km of beaches. The city is well located as a base to explore the rest of the island. It has enough to offer that you don't need to go anywhere else.

The area around the beaches is crowded with bars, restaurants and clubs. The old town is less developed, with winding streets and pavement cafes. Traces of the town's long history are visible. The Roman amphitheatre of Curium has been restored, and the ruins of the city of Amathus are also visible. The most obvious historical feature is the medieval castle, famous for hosting the marriage of King Richard the Lionheart.

Accommodation and Food

Limassol has plenty of high quality and budget hotels, as well as apartments and studios. Many hotels are located near the waterfront, though some are in town. Air conditioning is common in most hotels and apartments, but it is worth checking to make sure. The majority of accommodation has amenities such as shops, restaurants and bars close by, and extras like sports facilities are available in the better quality establishments.

Limassol is a cosmopolitan town with international cuisine readily available. However, you really must try traditional Cypriot dishes, which includeMeze, which actually means 'mixture' and can include as many as thirty different dishes. Moussaka, kebabs and baklava are popular, along with a range of dishes involving fish, chicken and local vegetables.

Cypriot food has been subject to many influences over the centuries. As a rule, Cypriots do not like to cook with anything that is not fresh. The local diet is in general very healthy, although many traditional desserts are almost life-threateningly luxurious.

Cyprus has been a centre for wine making for 4000 years, and produces a range of excellent white and red wines in large and small-scale wineries. Cypriots also like coffee, which they serve strong and accompanied by a glass of water.

Activities

Cyprus attracts many holidaymakers who are there simply to party. Limassol is not so popular as, say, Ayia Napa with the karaoke crowd, but the nightlife is still pretty good. The attractions of lazing on the excellent beaches are considerable, too.

If you want more than this, there is plenty on offer. Cyprus has a long and fascinating history to discover. Kolossi Castle, constructed by the Order of St John in the 13 th Century and restored in the 1930s, is particularly good.

Cyprus is also a land of great beauty, with many nature trails. Picnic areas are well regulated and cared for, and subject to strict laws regarding conservation and protection of the environment.

Exploring inland, you will find beautiful scenery and quiet villages. In the Troodos mountains you can find the Kykkos monastery, which is home to several religious relics. The mountains are also a good place to go hiking or, if you head up high enough, skiing. A car is necessary if you plan to do some touring.

Cyprus is not so large that you cannot visit the other towns of the island if you want to. The capital, Nicosia, is particularly worth a look. However, there is no need to travel if you don't want to. Limassol has a good shopping centre in the more modern part of town. Alternatively, the shops of the old town have some lovely handicrafts such as lace and silver.
