Brussels is the capital of Belgium. It is a large, modern and cosmopolitan city with a typically north-European climate. The weather is typically mild but can be cloudy or wet.

Although the city was officially founded in 1979, its origins date back to the 6 th Century, and there is plenty of history to be seen alongside the modern buildings. Here and there you will see Baroque and Gothic buildings among the concrete and steel.

Brussels has many fine museums dedicated to all manner of subjects such as musical instruments, art and vehicles. Or if you want to buy rather than see, there are plenty of places to indulge yourself. Brussels has many specialist shops dealing in chocolate, beer and antiques. The first two are quintessentially Belgian and you will find many brands unavailable elsewhere. The antique stores sell European items of course but also a great variety of African artefacts, especially from the Congo region.

The nightlife is good, with many bars remaining open until dawn. Things tend to quieten down late in the evening, then liven up again after midnight. With something like 400 local beers to try out, some of them with up to 10% alcohol content, a night on the town can be quite an experience.

Belgium is not a large country, and is well served by public transport. It is easy to explore more of Belgium using Brussels as a base.

Accommodation and Food

As you might expect from such a large city, there is a wide variety of accommodation on offer to suit all tastes and budgets. Belgian cuisine is considered by many to be as good as anything France has to offer, and of course international dishes are widely available. Some hotels offer special 'culinary weekends' centring on fine food and excellent wine in pleasant surroundings,

Belgium is famous for its chocolate as everyone knows, but there is also marzipan to consider, as well as special cookies baked to traditional recipes. For something more savoury, Belgians are very fond of mussels and have many different ways to cook them.

Brussels has a thriving Chinatown where you can find not only authentic Chinese food but also Vietnamese and Thai dishes

Belgium is home to a vast number of beers, some of them very potent. Some breweries are open to visitors, which can be a great way to find out more about the locals brews.

Activities

The Grand Place the Lower Town is worth a visit. It is surrounded by historic churches dating from the Renaissance. The city has many historic buildings as well as others which, while not famous, are excellent examples of various architectural styles.

The Atomium, site of the 1958 world fair, is a peculiar looking building built in the shape of a giant replica of an iron molecule. At the top you will find a spectacular view of the city, and there is an entertainment complex with an IMAX cinema and a waterpark.

It would be a shame to visit Brussels and not spend some time sipping coffee or beer in a pavement café. Brussels' many friendly cafés offer a chance to take a break and just relax, watching the people going by and perhaps meeting some of the friendly locals – who are likely to be doing just the same as you.

Shoppers will like the city's markets. Most neighbourhoods have one at the weekend; they vary in size so don't be disappointed if the nearest one is small – there are plenty of others to explore! Perhaps the most bustling is in the Gare de Midi district.
