The capital of Australia, Melbourne is located in the territory of Victoria in the southeastern corner of the country. The city is a mix of the modern and the historic, with Victorian buildings and landscaped gardens. Melbourne hosts many festivals such as the Food and Wine Festival and sporting events including the Australian Grand Prix and Australian Open Tennis tournament.

Accommodation and Food

There is a wide range of accommodation available in Melbourne, but during the festivals or major sporting events it can be difficult to find somewhere to stay. It is thus worth booking well in advance if you intend to visit at these times.

Melbourne is a very cosmopolitan city. Food from most corners of the world can be found in the city's many restaurants. Chinese, English, Greek, Italian and Vietnamese are common as a result of post-war immigration, but there are plenty of other influences on local cuisine. Melbourne hosts a food and wine festival from March to April, which should appeal to lovers of good food. Australia's south is also famous for its wines, so a good bottle to accompany your meal should not be hard to come by.

Things to Do

It is easy to get about in Melbourne. There is a good free tram service in the city centre.

Depending on when you visit Melbourne, you may be able to watch a major sporting event like the Australian Grand Prix or the Melbourne Cup horse race. At most other times there are still good opportunities to see sport. The Melbourne Cricket Ground plays host to Australian Rules Football in winter as well as cricket in the summer.

If history, art and culture are more to your taste, there are several cultural centres such as the National Gallery of Victoria, the Victorian Arts Centre and the Myer Music Bowl. Historical attractions include the Old Melbourne Gaol and Captain Cook's cottage. Or visit the Air Force Museum at Point Cook.

Melbourne offers a range of shopping opportunities ranging from ultra-modern malls to the more personal experience of the Queen Victoria Market. If that's not wild enough, Werribee on the southern edge of the city has a zoo, gardens and the historic Werribee Park Mansion.

Venturing out of the city, there are many more attractions. The Yarra River region is famous for its vineyards. Visitors can explore the area by balloon, 4x4 or on foot, or perhaps go canoeing on the river. The Healesville Sanctuary has a huge collection of uniquely Australian wildlife.

Heading north from Melbourne leads to the Murray River region. Here you can play golf or take a river cruise on a paddlesteamer. Swan Hill Settlement recreates a period feeling with vintage cars, paddle steamers and horse-drawn carriages. There are three national parks in the region and safaris aboard 4x4 vehicles are available.

To the south lies Prince Phillip Bay. There you can explore the shops and historic buildings of Queenscliff, or take to the beach at Mornington Peninsula. The area is well known for its surfing beaches and wildlife reserves. Queenscliff has a number of Victorian hotels and recreates the period flavour with steam trains and horse-drawn carriages. Not far away is a working steam powered mill.
